Sleep Hack Of The Week

Who here has heard of the ‘Military Method’?

OK… what about the ‘4-7-8’ method?

No? … Me neither.

I’m not talking about a workout regime.

The Military Method is a sleep technique developed for soldiers to fall asleep very fast.

It’s for developed for high pressure situations where a soldier needs rest.

That’s not the interesting part. The interesting part are the results.

How long does it take for soldiers to fall asleep with this method?

120 seconds.

Yeah, you read that right.

2 minutes.

This blew my mind.

I mean, it sometimes takes me 2 hours to fall asleep, let alone 2 minutes.

I was curious. As a poor sleeper who’s only now developed into an average one (shout out sleep masks and pillowcases!), I needed to know more.

And I’m sure you do too.

So let’s dig a little deeper:

Here’s the secret sauce to the Military Method:

  1. Start by taking slow, deep breaths. Inhale slowly in your nose and count to 4 before exhaling through your nose.

  2. Relax your entire face. Start with your forehead and move downwards to your cheek, mouth and jaw. Focus on one part at a time with deep breathes and let go of any muscle tensions.

  3. Once your face is relaxed, work your way down to your neck, shoulders and arms. Drop your shoulders down and let yourself sink into the bed. Focus your attention on one arm and slowly work your way downward to your biceps, forearms, hands and fingers.

  4. Replicate Step 3 down to your chest, pelvis and legs

  5. Once you’ve completed steps 1-4, clear your mind for 10 seconds by imagining a relaxing scene. This could be lying in a meadow under the blue sky or sleeping in a hammock in a rain forest. Anything to relax you.

  6. Last step but REALLY important. If you can’t think of a relaxing scene, say “don’t think” repeatedly in your mind for 10 seconds. If other thoughts distract you, put them aside and bring your attention back to this.

I know what you are about to say.

“Jim… this is a lot of steps and seems strenuous to do. Why should I try this”?

Well, as my mum likes to say, the proofs in the pudding.

If you master the Military Method there is a 96% success rate that you will fall asleep within 120 seconds. (based on results)

Which is insane!

Think about the health, social, financial and productivity benefits. To fall asleep in 2 minutes consistently would be a game changer.

But the catch to this?

Mastering the process takes 6 weeks.

Regardless, I’m tempted to try the Military Method.

It’s a LONG period of time to be consistent but the ultimate reward is totally worth it in my opinion.

If this is too extreme for you to do, I totally get it.

But hey, we’re all about providing the little nuggets of wisdom and the easier way to do things around here!

So my key takeaway from the Military Method or any other sleep technique is this:

Focusing on your body and distracting yourself from thinking about other things is an effective way to improve your sleep.

Many of us can’t sleep because we let our mind control us 24/7.

Forcing your mind to focus on relaxation of the body distracts it and lulls it into sleep.

Try implementing this and see if you have any results.

If you use the Military Method to fall asleep, I want to hear from you!

Interesting Sleep Fact

Coffee? Nope.

🦁 Lions Mane? Forget about it.

🥶 Cold plunge? Maybe.

💤 Sleep? …

Can I get a hell YEAH!?

I say it all the time, but people REALLY underestimate the importance of sleep to learning.

The benefits are scientifically proven.

Getting a full nights sleep (7-8 hours):

  • Improves memory consolidation (ie. what you remember from today) by 20-30% (Source)

  • Enhance alertness and cognitive function by ~10-20% (Source)

  • Significantly reduces chances of getting sick (because when we are sick, it’s far harder to retain information and learn)

If you don’t sleep at all or get only a few hours (looking at you party animals…), your ability to learn decreases by 40%!

Ipso facto, PRIORITISE YOUR SLEEP!

You will forget a lot of things you consume throughout the day if you don’t.

Building in Public - Founder Updates

Another week, another new skill for Jim to learn.

Last edition was all about stock take, categorising items and inventory management.

This week?

Photography, filming and directing, of course.

A big part of our goal to grow the COZO brand comes from story telling.

Explaining why we built COZO, why our products are different and how they help improve your sleep.

And while reviews, website design and fancy photos matter, it’s clear the best way to tell a story is through video.

That’s what focus has been the last few weeks.

Specifically, filming video testimonials from some of our biggest supporters.

It sounds easy. Explain the COZO story and the benefits of COZO products sounds easy.

But mastering the lighting, audio and film?

Not as easy for a film novice like me.

We are finalising our videos and you’ll see these testimonials very soon.

We hope they grow awareness of the COZO brand and the awesome products that we are building.

Protecting your skin and hair while improving your sleep?

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
